Embroidered vs Woven Patches

Embroidered patches have a raised, stitched texture. Woven patches have a flatter surface that suits finer detail. Compare the same design in both styles.

They are not a scale comparison; check your artwork at the actual size you plan to order.

When to choose embroidered patches

Choose embroidery when the stitched surface is part of the look you want.

Bold logos, crests and larger lettering give embroidery space to show its texture. Broad areas of colour make the stitch direction visible, as you can see in these examples.

If your design includes tiny text or closely spaced lines, it may need simplifying or making larger. Check the smallest important detail before deciding on the finished size.

When to choose woven patches

Choose weaving when small lettering and fine outlines matter more than a raised finish.

Woven patches are worth considering for detailed illustrations, narrow linework and designs with several small elements. Finer threads give those details more room than thicker embroidery stitches.

A flatter surface still has a fabric texture. Weaving also has limits: very small letters and tightly packed details may need adjusting so they remain readable on the finished patch.

What is the difference?

Embroidered patches

Embroidery stitches thread onto a fabric base. The stitches sit above the surface, giving the patch texture and making the direction of the thread part of the design.

Woven patches

Weaving forms the design with finer threads woven together. The face is flatter, and fine outlines and small lettering can often be reproduced more clearly.

Look at the lettering and aircraft outlines

In the matching photographs above, the small lettering at the top and the lines around the aircraft are clearer in the woven version. In the embroidered version, the stitch texture is more visible across the larger areas of colour.

That is the main choice: how much detail you need to retain, and how much stitched texture you want. Neither method makes every design work at every size.

How to choose for your artwork

Check the design at its finished size

A logo can look clear on a large screen and become difficult to read on a small patch. View or print it at the size you intend to order, then check the smallest letters, gaps and outlines.

Decide which details must stay

If a small line of text or a detailed illustration is essential, woven is usually the first method to consider. If you want a visibly stitched crest or bold logo, start with embroidered. Enlarging the patch or simplifying the artwork can change the choice.

Choose the backing separately

The face of the patch and the way you attach it are separate choices. Tell us what it will go on and how you plan to attach it, then check the available backing and border options on the relevant product page.

Compare the specification before the price

Do not assume one method will always cost less. Compare the same design, size, quantity and backing. Use the relevant product page or ask for a quote for your specification.
